“A lot of people think we’re biologically programmed to die, but the truth is that we’re biologically programmed for survival. There is no mechanism inside us that turns on to kill us when a certain period of time has elapsed.
—Dr. Thomas Kirkwood
Think about a person age 120 years old who is living similarly to an actual 50 years old person. Imagine a 120-year-old living like today’s 50 year-olds. Is it feasible? If we go by the scientists in Robert Kane Pappas’ recent film, “To Age or Not to Age” this is highly possible.
The scientists that were featured in the film to Age or Not to Age discovered the ways to postpone and probably mitigate the diseases that are usually associated to aging, such as cardiovascular disease, cancer, neurodegenerative diseases as well as diabetes. However, when the genes that control the aging process, the SIRT2/SIRT1 genes among others, are altered, they may as a consequence increase a person’s lifespan.
“People would age more slowly, stay younger longer, and remain free of disease for a longer time.”
—Dr. Cynthia Kenyon
Despite the fact that the film, To Age or Not to Age, gives an outline if the science behind the aging process, it also focuses on several religious, moral, economic and practical connotations of longer lifespan. Who are the persons who will have access to the medicines? Who are those who are going profit from the breakthroughs? Moreover, will the price of these compounds make this medicine available only for the elites?
The issue of overpopulation remains potentially disastrous. What will be the consequence if the population lives even longer? What are the implications for the social structures, social security, family and marriage? If we really can postpone our aging process, should we actually do so? Or are we simply being arrogant by challenging the very basic laws of nature? Where does the process of evolution fits in, in all this?
