A research reported on 1st November 2011, for the very first time that a red-wine compound exhibited hopeful health benefits when tested on humans. This relatively small study had eleven participants, who were greatly overweight but healthy. It was observed that consuming low dosage of Resveratrol, the red-wine compound, for 30 days led to several improvements on their metabolic systems.

Patrick Schrauwen from Maastricht University, who headed this research, which was published in the online version of the journal named Cell Metabolism. They result of the study was considered highly interesting. He said that the research team discovered several effects, and all indicated hopes of improved metabolism in humans.

Resveratrol has interested scientists since its effect on substances such as yeast, mice and fruit flies resulted in benefits similar to those of a diet; increase the life span of several different species. In order to live longer and better, some people self-impose strict restrictions on the intake of calories. However, few people can put up with such restrictions.

Mice were also reported to have experienced protective benefits from Resveratrol such as resistance against diabetes and obesity. It also increased their enduring capacity and made them less prone to being overweight, thereby inducing longevity.

Some scientists felt that the fact that French people lead a long life in spite of eating heavy fats, also known as the “French Paradox,” might be explained by the effects of Resveratrol found in red wine.

Resveratrol, which is a commonly available drug in pharmacies and groceries, is being consumed regularly by some people. However, its expected benefits to humans were never established formally. Scientists haven’t really comprehended if there is any risk associated in consuming high dosage of resveratrol. Researchers even doubted the validity of early research on Resveratrol.

The healthy but obese men were given a placebo or Resveratrol dose of 150 mg for a month by Schrauwen in the latest study. He then moved those on Resveratrol to placebo and vice-versa, for the next 30 days. At the time of every change, the effect on their metabolism was examined by a series of elaborate tests.

Effects similar to those observed in animals, such as, reducing the rate of metabolism, stopping the fat from accumulating in the liver, reduced levels of blood sugar, blood pressure, inflammation and triglycerides, and improving muscle efficiency were observed in humans treated with Resveratrol. There were no specific side effects reported.

National Institute of Aging scientist Rafael de Cabo, who has been experimenting with effect of Resveratrol in apes, finds this to convey immense promise and significant development.

It was observed by the experts that the amount of Resveratrol used in the ape trials was less than that what consumed by most people daily. To equal the effect, a minimum of two gallons of red wine was given to the apes.

Other experts who are also conducting studies on Resveratrol as well as another protein enhancing compounds known as Sirtuins, have appreciated the findings of this study.

David A. Sinclair from Harvard Medical School said that this study has emerged at a time when diabetes and obesity have reached an alarming level and are still growing. Sirtuins seem to be a promising intervention to people who are obese and practices no physical activities.

Leonard P. Guarante, a researcher studying the phenomenon of aging at the Massachusetts Institute of Technology, stressed the importance of this research on Sirtuins, which strongly endeavors to establish the scope of Sirtuins as the latest way to combat human ailments.

However, Schrauwen and other scientists warned that, in order to confirm Resveratrol’s long-term health benefits to people who are not obese is real more research need to be conducted. The study needs to be followed with more subjects and wider sample studies.

Stephen Helfand from Brown University said that it may seem a bit early now; a day will soon come when the human race will be looking back at the stage when Resveratrol was just discovered. To see the astounding progress in medical science, especially on anti-aging medicine, that grape medicine has. People will consider it as a significant point in the history of anti-aging research.

Helfand said that this discovery of molecules, which are creating such powerful benefits towards disorders of aging and increasing longevity, are crucial for aging research. This may also be regarded as significant as the advent of antibiotics as means to cure infectious diseases. Helfand considered it to be extraordinary to be a part of the aging biology research.

The Fountain of Youth is a chimera but the possibility for longer life may be achieved.

An article in Thursday’s issue of Scientific Reports states that researchers have created a new drug that can improve the longevity of mice by 44 percent in contrast to those not given the drug. The latter is a synthetic composite known as SRT1720 that was devised by Sirtris, a pharmaceutical company located in Cambridge, Mass.

The New York Times published that studies are actually being conducted to verify variations of SRT1720 on human beings. The aim is to generate a pill which will make this drug’s benefits accessible to the general public.

An interview was carried out with David Sinclair and Dr. Christoph Westphal, two of three co-chairs of Sirtris’ Scientific Advisory Board by “Nightline” in 2007. While Sinclair was the company’s scientific genius, Westphal was its principal investor.

Both David Sinclair and Dr Christoph Westphal are eager to exploit the former’s discovery; that is resveratrol. This is an ingredient of red wine which stimulated the genes that directed aging. Consequently, the mice injected with this substance lived 30 percent longer than those which didn’t undergo this experiment. Obviously, SRT1720 has the same properties as resveratrol.

According to Sinclair, resveratrol is similar to Pac-Man governing the cells and subsequently, it becomes more vigorously effective. Eventually the cells’ increased efficiency enhances the metabolic rate, general health of the cell itself which is then more immune to afflictions of aging.

Westphal emphasizes that if their experiments are conclusive, these drugs will be immensely triumphant ones as they have the power to cure serious diseases. Indubitably, they may transform the lives of humankind.

In the recent years, increasing studies have proven that a substance found in wine, known as reseratrol, increases our lifespan. Nevertheless, apart from that, wine has several health benefits. One glass of wine per day for a woman and two glasses of wine a day for a man is significantly better than consuming spirit or beer.

Red wine does act positively against the dreadful effect of smoking, especially on endothelium. In addition, most studies suggest that wine have some powerful heart benefits, such as preventing coronary heart diseases. The presence of polyphenols in red wine helps to sustain healthy blood vessels. Even the risk of Alzheimer’ disease and the development of kidney stone formation are lower when consuming wine.

The strong anti-aging properties of wine should be capitalized in typical life. However, there are particular ways to assure that even wine becomes healthier. This involves aspects such as refining the sterilization process and production of the win itself.

The cooking process is extremely important to maximise the benefit of any product. This applies for wine. From the initial phase of crushing grapes to the end process of fermenting; while additional activities such as selecting only the best grapes remains a prime prerequisite. Even during the process of fermentation, it is essential to regularly check if the wine taste well, or if additional sugar is required.

Commonly, for the production of wine, half-ripened grapes are used. This prevents the wine from being too sweet. A typical great wine bottle should at least be 6 weeks old. The longer, is often considered as being better, for the sake of taste. So patient is the key to a healthy bottle of wine, which can positively contribute to a longer life.

Sirtris, a pharmaceutical company announced a pause in the clinical trials for resveratrol. It is a compound found in red wine. Researchers claim that reservertrol might hold the secret to longer life.

The company’s attempt to halt the research on resveratrol suggests that the compound might not be as beneficial as suggested.

In 2008, GlaxoSmithKline took over Sirtris for $720 million. According to Sirtris’s Chief executive George Vlasuk, SRT501 (the company’s formulation of resveratrol) is an important substance but wasn’t the main focus for the merger. He said that there are many attributes of resveratrol which makes it unsuitable as a drug. One of the factors is that the compound is too complex to sustain a high volume of resveratrol in our blood. In addition, different doses seem to have diverse effects.

Dr. Vlasuk said that resveratrol is believed to increase the expression of SIRT1. However, it has been seen at some doses of the compound seem to stop the release of the protein SIRT1. Besides, from a commercial perspective, resveratrol is a natural compound and can’t be given a patent.

Glaxo merged with Sirtris to facilitate their entrance into a new research field. It is believed that SIRT1 prolongs the life of mice being fed on specific calorie diets. Scientists are expecting or at least hoping that the activation of SIRT1 in human will have the same benefits.

Three clinical trials have been completed on synthetic resveratrol-mimicking drugs. Sirtris will make the result public next year. The drug does work fairly well. It activates only SIRT1 in comparison to resvertrol which influence other processes of the cell. Dr. Vlasuk says that the development of more accurate drugs targeting SIRT1 reduces the pertinence of resveratrol.

However, David Sinclair as well as Christoph Westphal who are the co-founder of Sirtris are still confident that resveratrol is an important compound. Dr. Sinclair is a researcher at the Harvard Medical School, and he says that unpublished research on rhesus monkeys is proving resveratrol to be a powerful molecule for longevity.

According to Dr. Westphal, resveratrol as well as the drug developed by Sirtris that copies the compound’s effects on SIRT1 have demonstrated positive results on both human and animal studies.

Dr. Rafael de Cabo from the National Institute on Aging has conducted research trials on rhesus monkeys. The result revealed parallel conclusion to those conducted by Dr. Sinclair on mice. It was demonstrated that resveratrol could prolong the life of obese mice consuming a high-fat diet, but apparently not for typical mice. Normal mice did, nonetheless, show signs of improved heart function as well as reduced bone loss (in the experiment). Dr. De Cabo was unwilling to discuss any preliminary information concerning longevity of the rhesus monkeys as their normal lifespan is 40 years, and it will take several years to evaluate the longevity effects that resveratrol has on them.

Resveratrol is a very interesting but complex molecule. The current potential of the compound is still ‘to be discovered’ said Dr. De Cabo. However, he claims that more research is rudimentary for any conclusion on the effectiveness of resveratrol.

Resveratrol is a famous plant extract that has been shown to extend life in yeast and lower animals because of its antioxidant and anti-inflammatory properties. Moreover, it seems that resveratrol suppresses inflammation in human beings. This assumption has been made based on the results that have been obtained from the initial prospective human trial of the extract that has been conducted by the University at Buffalo endocrinologists. The result of the study that has been carried out has appeared as a rapid electronic publication in the Journal of Clinical Endocrinology & Metabolism website. The result will also be published in a future print issue of the said journal.

Furthermore, the paper has been chosen to be included in Translational Research in Endocrinology & Metabolism. The latter is a novel online anthology that focuses on the most recent clinical applications of advanced research from journals of the Endocrine Society.

When a number of plants are under attack by pathogens, like fungi or bacteria, the compound, resveratrol, is produced naturally. It can be found in red wine as well as in the skin of red grapes. Moreover, it is produced through chemical synthesis that derived mainly from Japanese knotweed. Additionally, it is sold like a nutritional supplement.

In accordance to Husam Ghamin, a PhD, who is a UB research assistant professor of medicine in addition to being the senior author of the study, resveratrol has been demonstrated to extend life other than bringing a reduction in the rate of aging in yeast, fruit flies and roundworms. These actions are thought to be influenced by an increased in the expression of a specific gene that is linked with longevity.

Besides, the compound is considered to play a part in the resistance of insulin as well. This condition is associated with oxidative stress which has a considerable damaging impact on health in general.

One of UB eminent professor of medicine, Paresh Dandona, MD, PhD, who is also a leading author of the study, says that since there is no illustrating impact of resveratrol on oxidative and inflammatory stress in human beings. He explains that they decided to verify if there is the possibility that the compound can bring a reduction in the level of oxidative as well as inflammatory stress in man.

He adds that several of the main mediators of insulin resistance are pro-inflammatory as well. They therefore examined the impact of resveratrol on the way they express themselves.

The study which was directed by Dandona was carried out at Kaleida Health’s Diabetes-Endocrinology Center of Western New York.

A nutritional complement that contained 40 milligrams of resveratrol was made used of as the active product. Twenty random participants were categorised in two groups of ten. One of the two groups was given the supplement. On the other hand, the other group was given a similar pill but containing no active ingredient. The participants were given the pill once on a daily basis for a period of six weeks. Fasting blood samples were gathered at the beginning of the trial as well at week one, three and finally six.

The results demonstrated that resveratrol was able to suppress the generation of free radicals or reactive oxygen species. The later is also referred to as being unstable molecules that are famous for causing oxidative stress and hence discharge pro-inflammatory factors in the blood stream. As a consequence, this results in harm to the blood vessel lining.

The blood samples that were gathered from the people who were taking the resveratrol also confirmed that it suppressed inflammatory protein tumour necrosis factor (TNF) in addition to likewise compounds that leads to a rise in the inflammation of blood vessels and cause interference in insulin action, thus leading to insulin resistance and the probability of developing diabetes.

As Dandona noted, over the long term, these inflammatory factors have an effect on the growth of type 2 diabetes, stroke, heart disease and aging.

On the other hand, the blood samples that were taken for the persons who received the pill without the resveratrol demonstrated no alteration in these pro-inflammatory markers.

Even though these results are quite promising, Dandona included a note of caution; the study that was conducted did not eradicate the probability that something found in the extract other than resveratrol was accountable for the anti-inflammatory effects.

He adds that the product that they used contained a mere 20 percent of resveratrol. Therefore, there is the possibility that something else in the preparation might be accountable for the optimistic effects. It is even possible that these agents are more powerful than resveratrol. They acknowledge that purer preparations are nowadays available and they do intend to test them.

There are many medical and health related myths circulating, some for many years now, and it is time those myths were corrected. In part one we discussed how important it would be to have a standardized method of controlling health data – an information bank of sorts that we could access for accurate information when it was required and even more important, one that was kept up to date. The unfortunate truth is that this collective of health data does not exist.

It is precisely for this reason that we have many serious health debacles these days like obesity, heart disease and so many others. It is a known fact that the many clinical proposals that exist today are flawed and contributory to many health issues due to their inaccuracies. Some top medical professionals in their fields have openly stated that many of these health program plans are pitched by the actual businesses that have a financial stake in their successful implementation.
Now that this situation has come to light, it is time to shine a light of truth on the top ten most misconstrued myths regarding our health. Today we will be examining the final five myths.

Myth 6: Eggs contain exceeding large quantities of cholesterol so we should steer clear of them.

Truth: An individual can consume one r two entire eggs each day and have no worries regarding their cholesterol intake.

It has been commonly believed that eating eggs will eventually damage your heart, but consuming entire eggs each day could in fact be very healthy for you, including benefits to your health like reducing your chances of contracting heart disease! Investigations have revealed that when healthy mature adults consume eggs each day there was no evidence of increased cholesterol nor did they increase their risk of heart illness.

Egg yolks most certainly do have cholesterol in them, no one should presume that when we eat them our dietary cholesterol needs will mean an automatic elevation of our blood cholesterol. Let us also remember that our body needs a particular quantity of cholesterol. This is where the mystification occurs. There is no relation between dietary cholesterol and our serum – blood cholesterol levels.

Therefore, you can comfortably eat your eggs, one or two each day and feel comfortable doing so. There is no need to feel guilty when enjoying your next omelet. Just try and eat free range or organic eggs!

[Just an added note: interestingly, increased cholesterol levels are more apt to be causes from insulin resistance due to a poor diet loaded with refined carbohydrates.] Myth Busted!

Myth 7: We should opt to consume margarine instead of eating butter.

Truth: We should be steering clear of margarine like the plague. That would also be true of the ones claiming to be healthy olive oil varieties. Butter is a much smarter choice.

This is just one more myth that needs to be dispelled. Do not for a minute believe that margarine and other spreads are any better for you due to being low in saturated fat and cholesterol. Butter is the better option over margarine and the vegetable oil type spreads. In spite of the cautions extended regarding saturated fats, butter still has so many advantages over margarine. It is a valuable source of A, D, E and K vitamins, the last one not particular easy to consume. It is also loaded with minerals and fatty acids that are a requirement for many physiological systems to operate.

Then you have the various margarines and veggie oil spreads that are promoted with millions of dollars by manufacturers in direct conflict to the superior quality of butter. They may indeed be less expensive to purchase but many people would refrain from ever consuming them again if they were privy to the production process of margarine!

Margarine is produced with different kinds of vegetable oils which have been treated with heat to tremendously elevated temperatures. They do this to render the oils rancid. Next they add a nickel catalyst as well as hydrogen atoms to congeal the mixture. We know that nickel is a high toxicity heavy metal and trace particles stay behind post production. Lastly, they add color and deodorants so the brutal odor from rotten oils is masked and the vomit inducing now grey colored mixture is altered.

While the margarine is going through the hardening procedure, dangerous carcinogenic trans-fatty acids are made. If it is a choice between butter and margarine, think about the difference between a block of cancer causing, bleached and perfumed muck or a healthy and beneficial natural spread. Your choice is a simple one. Myth Busted!

Myth 8: Imitation sweeteners make a good substitute for sugar.

Truth: Synthetic sweeteners are harmful to your system!

Aspartame, also known as phenylalanine and sold as brand names NutraSweet and Equal, has been associated with Multiple Sclerosis, Lupus, Fibromyalgia and even Alzheimer’s disease. It has been called a silent killer with symptoms that include leg numbness, cramping, vertigo, dizziness, headaches, tinnitus, painful joints, depression [due to aspartame lowering serotonin quantities in your brain], and slurred speech memory problems and panic attacks from anxiety.

Since we are so often careful of what we eat and many are endlessly dieting, we buy into promotional information about no sugar or reduced calories when in fact quite often these consumables are manufactured using imitation sweeteners. Ironically, these synthetic sweeteners lead to carbohydrate craving which winds up making us fat!

These artificial sweeteners can be located in nearly any type of foods from yogurt to soda pop and bakery items to candy bars and gum. Taken in minute quantities probably will not become an issue but the public needs to become far more aware of what is in the food and drinks they are consuming and this means aspartame. Why risk your continuing health when a food or beverage additive is so risky? Myth Busted!

Myth 9: Try and consume a diet low in fat.

Truth: Everyone requires fat in their systems. In particular they need essential fats.

The notion that any and all fat is unhealthy is totally not true. Each cell in your system must have fat for proper metabolism functionality, hormone development, brain functionality and so many other crucial mechanisms.

We require essential fats from the foods we ingest [essential means our body does not manufacture it from within and so we source it externally]. Superior sources of these fats have omega 3 fatty acids in abundance. These would include olive oil, nuts, avocados and fish oil.

When you eat the proper fats it will aid in reducing your blood pressure, it thins the blood thus safeguarding us from clotting. Additionally, many inflammatory ailments can be assisted with regular supplies of omega 3 fats from our diets or supplementation. When you are lacking in omega 3’s your inflammation troubles will become worsened and these can include arthritis, asthma, Crohns disease and even heart ailments.

Our body is unable to absorb fat soluble vitamins A, D, E and K without proper quantities of fats in our foods. Hence, regardless of how much healthy and nutritious veggies and fruits you consume, if you follow a low fat diet plan it is quite possible you will eventually fall victim to degenerative illnesses from being vitamin deficient. A prime example of this would be osteoporosis. In order for the calcium we consume to do its job, it must have vitamin D and K absorbed to aid in bone strength and mass.

Since the human brain is made up of something like seventy percent fat [lipids], we must be getting sufficient levels of healthy fats and cholesterol so it can be at its peak in functionality. There should be no surprise then that a reduced ingestion of fats in your system can mean short term memory impairment, lack of focus, depression, bi polar conditions and schizophrenia and eventually leading to Alzheimer’s disease.

When we lack proper amount of fats in our meal plan we open ourselves up to higher cholesterol levels, we lose skin elasticity and it can become flaky and dry with the result being wrinkles and lines. The advantages of having healthful fats in our bodies are kind of similar to antioxidants. If you have been listening perhaps now you have been persuaded to raise the quantity of healthy fats in your meals- just make sure you are eating the “good” fats. Myth Busted!

Myth 10: Drinking red wine is great for a healthy heart and even physicians recommended it.

Truth: The alcohol in red wine is harmful to your health, it is a neurotoxin! It is not what is beneficial about the red wine.

Alcohol has nothing to do with reduced rates of heart disease in individuals, it is actually an antioxidant known as resveratrol in the wine – which originates in the grapes. Wine is laden with polyphenols, a variety of antioxidant that cannot be found in any other alcoholic beverage. The number of polyphenols located in the red wine has a two or three times greater quantity than can be found in white wine, the polyphenols come with some amazingly healthy benefits.

When you drink alcohol, you are literally inviting a harmful neurotoxin into your body under the guise of a comforting beverage when in actuality it can cause hormone imbalance, liver harm and other physical and emotional drama. If you are currently a teetotaler, you should remain that way! It is not the alcohol content in the red wine that is beneficial for your health, but the antioxidants. You can find these antioxidants elsewhere, like in grape juice. Myth Busted!

IN CLOSING:

Well, there you go, the ten top health myths finally busted!

I would be doing the reader a disservice by not repeating that they must stay observant in their quest for a healthy mind and body. Be suspicious of health assertions promoted in the media by the media in particular, the pharmacology industry as well as your very own physician. Your health is all yours – it belongs to you, so manage it accordingly.

Start doing your own research to educate yourself about what interests you regarding your health or health in general. Try and find dependable sources of data and keep an open mind when looking into alternative and traditional forms of treatments when these are suitable. Ultimately you control your health and any information required must pass through you so be inquisitive, study recent health trends and suggestions and reacquire the power over your health and personal well being.

Sirtuins is becoming a trendy term in the sphere of skin care. Yet, in line with its popularity, some people do not really know what sirtuins are? It is, a class of proteins that exists in various organisms in humans, plants and even bacteria.

There have been several studies conducted on the field of calorie-restricted diets. The animal studies have shown that mammals, which are fed with calorie-restricted diets, are healthier and live longer than animals which are fed with a normal diet. This positive effect of calorie-restricted diets is unknown to high degree. However, sirtuins seems to have its role to play. Recent research has shown that sirtuins may slow down the aging process. It contributes to postpone cell death by safeguarding cells from “DNA damage”.

The calorie-restriction formula is yet fully proved for humans. It is highly possible that humans experienced an alternative effect compared to monkeys and fruit flies, on which the study has been carried out. Nevertheless, we are slightly progressing and understanding that starving is not the only way to initiate the benefit of sirtuins.

Sirtris, a research company has proved that resveratrol, is a particular antioxidant present in the skin of red grapes. This component activates sirtuins. It was shown in a research conducted on mice, that once they were put under high doses of resveratrol several health benefits were seen. It enhanced insulin resistance, assured weight control and augmented lifespan by around 20 percent. A mouse that was put on treadmill was miraculously able to run twice as fast and far than a mouse that had not been given resveratrol.

Truth Or Empty Promises

Nonetheless, it is certain that companies in the skin care sector are definitely eager to derive high profit from sirtuins. Companies such Avon have already launched products with the component, whereas other Spanish and German companies are also adopting the power of red-wine into their creams.

The promise of whether sirtuins will help to act as anti-aging substance will be seen after some years of use. It has already been shown that red wine and grape skin are vital antioxidants needed to assure longevity as well as healthiness. So, sirtuins can hopefully be significant weapon for anti-aging.

Stuart Cracraft became a father four years ago at age forty five and as the moderator of the Resveratrol Users Group, he takes it with the hope it will buy him a few more precious years with his young daughters. He is concerned that as he ages, his mind and body will have a difficult challenge to keep pace with his children.

He also recently watched as his mother passed away after fighting an illness for eight tough years. Cracraft, who works as an IT employee would love nothing more than to spare his two kids that same burden with him, as he went through with his mother.

He took action and changed his dietary plan, cutting back on sugar and loading up on egg proteins and fish. He began drinking tea and consuming fish oil supplements along with multivitamins. Not exactly a freakish change to his routine, but he remained open minded about further change.

He spent three years studying a compound that is located in red wine called resveratrol, which has proven to extend the life of animals and decrease their risk of disease. He started taking fifty mgs. per day. He is excited by the research stating it is the most powerful of all antioxidants together and having all of that in a single pill is too great to pass up on.

These days the search for a fountain of youth continues as never before. Normally skeptical, well educated individuals are joining the rank and file in the search for youth. Scientists who are trained professionally to be dubious in their search for concrete evidence are joining the bandwagon. Many experts argue that it is a fools run without any convincing evidence about any specific therapeutic treatment.

Inventor and futurist Ray Kurzweil, has been an advocate for life extension for a number of years now and has written about it in his books. The co-founder of PayPal Peter Thiel, not long ago donated $3.5 million to the Methuselah Foundation, A research organization devoted to longevity founded by renowned gerontologist and life extension advocate, Aubrey de Grey. De Grey will tell anyone who will listen that we can live up to one thousand years old.

Another devoted resveratrol enthusiast and a computer programmer who wished to stay anonymous has taken his anti aging routine to the next level and begun caloric restriction. This is yet one more far-reaching technique to extend one’s life that worked in monkeys but has no conclusive data for human trials. By all accounts, it is also very hard on the body from an appearance perspective.

He states that engineers understand that when someone understands a system, they also have the power to change the system. He goes on to say that, a real engineer will refuse to accept bugs in any programming code, his tools, and his operating system or within his own body.

Resveratrol has shown to safeguard animals from numerous diseases like heart disease, Alzheimer’s disease, and Parkinson’s, and jarred the public’s mind last year when several high profile studies displayed evidence that mice receiving the substance survived for a longer period than mice that were not receiving it. That said the science community is not at all convinced it will have the same effect on humans.

Cracraft believes he does not have the time to wait for conclusive verification. He thinks it will add perhaps another thirty percent to his life expectancy so by delaying things for another ten years means he has wasted three. In the end, Cracraft says he could get another ten years if he is lucky.

Another IT worker in Switzerland, who at thirty two years old is even more excited by the prospects. He says that if resveratrol can add a few more years to his life span, he may be around to enjoy some new scientific breakthroughs in life extension, perhaps allowing him to live to two hundred years old.

As a computer geek, he believes technology is the answer for everything! That according to a cellular biologist and longevity investigator from the University of Texas. He says people who do the research think of mice as tiny little furry humans with long tails, obviously they are not so there are no firm ideas about what will happen.

Scientific study on resveratrol’s effect on humans is just now commencing. Researchers caution that individuals consuming the substance are literally running uncontrolled experiments on their body’s – these could cause people to get sick or at the least, with no positive outcome.

History is full of these kinds of risky ventures into unproven clinical treatments that have causes unexpected issues. The Fen-phen and ephedra gambits are typical instances of compounds used by folks who thought they may be effective and so were administered by physicians no less, before they were properly vetted by clinical trials. The science is made public, proper studies are not conducted and in the end, problems are encountered by humans as the lab rodents.

Fen-phen showed much promise as a diet supplement until research showed it might induce deadly heart ailments and hypertension. Ephedra was a promising stimulant, that is until unexpected fatalities and strokes began to occur resulting in a panicked public and FDA ban. Human Growth hormones when utilized in off labeling treatments, has been associated with diabetes and nerve pain.

As one of numerous highly educated resveratrol users, Cracraft follows the news and various trials, sends question to scientists doing research and contributes to forms and message boards to understand as much as possible from other users. His fifty mg dosage was decided on by charts used by scientists and extrapolated animal doses to human stats and has eventual plans to increase the dosage up to four hundred milligrams.

Since there were no obvious adverse reactions in the lab mice, the resveratrol advocates believe it to be a safe elixir. They also like the fact that the author of the mouse studies David Sinclair, is also ingesting the product as well. Sinclair has also started the company named Sirtris Pharmaceuticals built around his findings. He has made a point of recommending against anyone ingesting resveratrol before comprehensive clinical testing has been concluded.

People taking resveratrol believe the risk they are taking is reasonable.
The thought process is that for someone like the thirty two year old devotee, true technologies to extend life may take another thirty years or more and anyone wishing to take advantage of these needs to be in reasonable health. He will be in his early sixties by then and needs to do whatever he can now to ensure his health will be as good as possible by then.

The same importance placed on longevity is the quality of that life in a person’s latter years. Cracraft has a best friend who also uses resveratrol religiously with the same idea of sparing his family his eventual suffering. He is fifty years of age and a professor at UofC, Irvine, and he adds fifty mgs. of resveratrol each day to a precise diet and regular physical training regimen. When taking higher doses he finds he bruises more easily, though he plans to carry on, not wanting to miss any benefits that could be achieved while he waited for the trials to conclude.

He watches his parents suffering and declining from diabetes, they are overweight, and their quality of life is drastically reduced. It is difficult to witness and they are only twenty one years older than he is! This motivates him to take action.

However, according to the experts, though these users may have righteous objectives, being ahead of the curve is not the point. The science is the key factor and it is far too soon to utilize the interventions – and not even that is accurate. They are not even classified as interventions at the present time. This is all just initial data with no thorough confirmation and this is worrisome to many in the scientific community.

Celebrating All Those Centenarians

Their amazing numbers just keep rising, which is an indication we humans as a species are doing something right, at least in certain countries of the world. The rise in elders who are reaching 100 years old continues to increase in some countries as indicated below.

Centenarian populations:

Japan 2008: 36,000 – Japan 2009: 40,000 – France 2000: 8,000 – France 2008: 20,000

There are mounting brigades of nonagenarians [these are folks in their 90’s] that are poised to join the incredible ranks of the centenarians around the world and Japan and France seem to have the market cornered for advanced senior citizenship.

A Reuter’s news report cited the number of Japanese hundred year olds has increased to more than forty thousand and that is a growth of ten percent in a portion of the population that is as well known for its mortality rate as it is for its longevity. Even more amazing is that Japan has a population of just one hundred twenty seven million people.

Still more impressive is the French, with a population of sixty five million people they had eight thousand centenarians only eight years ago and their population of centenarians has swelled to over twenty thousand as of 2008. With France’s current life expectancy by 2050 there will be more than eighty thousand folks living in France who are over the age of one hundred!

For comparison purposes, based on the U.S. Census Bureau, The American population of approximately three hundred million has the highest number of centenarians anywhere at ninety six thousand. The U.S. longevity numbers are not too precise because of lousy record keeping so many years ago. The exact number of centenarians just cannot be tallied.

The Japanese have the longest life spans in the entire world and they have the well preserved birthing data to back this up. The Japanese also ingest about one thousand fewer calories each day and because they must import their bovine meat and dairy items they have a lower iron and calcium consumption, which means according to popular theory, they age much slower.

Those nations around the globe that have the available grazing land and fresh water to sustain their cattle herds have greater incidences of cardiovascular disease and cancer known as age related illnesses. Iron from the red meat and the calcium from dairy, required more in the formative years, just increase the oxidation and calcification [aging] in mature males and postmenopausal females.

The Japanese who inhabit the island of Okinawa have been lauded in the past for their prolonged life spans but this is changing. At one time, it was the region with the longest life expectancy in Japan but now it is ranked at twenty six among the forty seven districts in Japan for longevity.

Since 1988, the consumption of meat and dairy in Okinawa and the intake of veggie pod pulses daily were both about ninety grams, roughly twenty to thirty percent higher than the nation average – respectively. During this same time span, daily consumption of green and yellow veggies in Okinawa was around fifty percent greater than average. Nevertheless, by 1998, the daily meat consumption and the fat energy ratio passes the 100 gram mark and thirty percent – respectively, the per day consumption of pulses and green and yellow veggies dropped to levels of the nations average. In recent times the young men of Japan, and in particular the Young male population of Okinawa, have been displaying a propensity to shun the traditional Okinawa cuisine.

Men in Japan between the age of sixty one and eighty one years of age living in country are three times more apt to smoke tobacco than a Japanese male residing in Hawaii and they also have a higher death rate than Hawaiian men do. It makes a person think of how long these Japanese citizens would survive if they did not consume alcohol or smoke.

Tobacco Use Declines

It is likely that a decrease in smoking by French women is the reason for such a large increase in the longevity rate in that country. Just 8.7 percent of females smoke tobacco in France against 16.9 percent in Greece and 26.1 percent in Italy, amongst other Mediterranean nations that have a high life span. According to the WHO. In Japan, around forty three percent of men and thirteen percent of women smoke tobacco as of 2007. In America, less than twenty percent of the population is smoking.

The Anti Aging, Magic Pill Is Aged With A Cork In It!

The French are not waiting around for the magic anti aging elixir, they already have it. Red wine that has been fermented for a number of weeks and aged for several years in oak barrels will do fine for their anti aging medicinal support. In point of fact, the red wine drinking French population is living past all prior forecasts, this inspite of eating a fairly high fat diet. This was known as the French paradox in the 1990’s.

Lately, there seems to be a decline in the amount of alcohol intake and smoking amongst the adult population over the age of sixty in France. However, the consumption of red wine still runs high in older French people. In addition, the unexpected fatalities of elder French citizens during the heat wave of 2003 inspired change in the manner that French families looked after their senior members of the family. Air conditioning now is common in homes occupied by French senior citizens.

To verify the French paradox, a study recently displayed that an additional five years could be added to those who toasted modestly with wine when evaluated alongside the teetotaling population.

Will Future Generations of French Continue Their Ardent Wine Consumption?

There was a time in France when the population was forced to fight for their wine. During the Nazi occupation in the Second World War the German military apprehended huge supplies of the grape, sending thousands of barrels of fine French wine home to Hitler’s Germany and converting acres of prime vineyards into war time production. One has to wonder if the current generations of young French would be just as willing to fight the good fight as their elders were bent on doing against the Nazis. The French are drinking half the quantity of wine that they did forty years ago so say the International Organization of Vine and Wine.

One also must wonder if the French can identify the clinical value of their wine as a cure for the obesity and diabetes epidemics occurring in Western Society. When you introduce red wine into the diet of lab rats, they appear to be able to steer clear of the many health ailments caused by obesity. One characteristic of red wine is its capability to control weight by monitoring the development of estrogen occurring from fat producing cells or [adipocytes]. When animals are fed red wine at the molecular level, they gain less mass than their teetotaling counterparts do and they live about a one third longer life span. This might be the reason why the French, though they eat a high amount of calories, remain fairly well physically proportioned.

The French have at their disposal a potential curative to the plague of obesity and diabetes overtaking western society and in the U.S. alone it signifies the largest expenditure of healthcare dollars and there are much fewer debates concerning the cost of health care in France.

The WHO recently ranked nation health care and France was number one while the United States came in thirty seventh place. There is a distinct disparity in fatalities due to respiratory ailments, specifically the margin of 31.2 per one hundred thousand persons in France, compared to 61.5 per one hundred thousand in the U.S. There is also the fact that French consumers of wine have a much lower coronary artery illness death rate at 78.4 per one hundred thousand than the U.S. at 163.4 per hundred thousand. France only spends 10.7 percent of its GDP on health care and America is doling out sixteen percent more than any other single country in the world as of July 2007.

Am I the only one who thinks the French Government should have a roving French Wine Export Marketing Minister in their government’s cabinet?

The American population would much prefer to simply pop a pill to drinking wine with their menu. Therefore, the French whine about the decline in the popularity of their wine while people are purchasing cheaper wine while dishing out billions of dollars in huge health care expenditures…and they call the French population haughty!

There was a period when the French had a strangle hold on global wine exports however; today they rank third behind the U.S. and Spain in wine exporting. They are currently garnering only fifteen percent of the international wine market. The business news in France cries that the “party is over” regarding French wine global distribution. It is very disappointing that international sales of French wine have dropped in recent history due to a surge in cheap wine out of Australia. The French must also shoulder partial responsibility as experts say their quality has fallen off somewhat.

The French do not believe in pumping out their fine wine as if it were an assembly line product. They take care to age their wines and ferment them over a period of time in order to achieve a wine that is deep in color and loaded in molecules only now getting massive media attention – resveratrol, quercetin and proanthocyanidins. It is truly a medicinal type of wine we are talking about here.

If you were perplexed about which variety of French wine to consume first you should test the wine from the Tannat grape in the southwestern district of Madiran, they are all laden with the healthy molecular compounds mentioned above.

Not all French wine is created equally; there are exceptions to the medicinal wine class. It was 2006 when masked raiders converged on a port pier in France and poured out tens of thousands of gallons of wine to dispute mass produced or what they termed – industrial French wine companies. A few disguised looters were charged but let go by the courts. The government of France is currently paying its vintners to uproot their vineyards so they can proceed with planting different crops to avoid a saturated market. France’s vintners – or winemakers – indeed understand they have a special anti aging, medicinal natural beverage. The despise the fakers out there who make wine and stick a label on the bottle that reads “made in France” but is far from the homegrown quality values.

If French wine is not of interest to you, customary dark red wines developed using Malbec and Carmenere grapes in the high mountainous regions of Chile and Argentina actually compete with French wines.

Should Wine Be Hyped For Its Longevity Properties?

Pretty sure, there will be those who cry foul over the promotion of wine as a healthful product. There are most certainly prideful debates about the virtues of one wine over another. In order to alleviate any argument, the preference of which alcoholic drink does have a bearing on the death rates of males.

Finland is time and again chosen for health evaluations due to the lofty use of tobacco and alcoholic beverages. They collected data over a twenty nine year from two thousand four hundred sixty eight executives regarding their choice of alcoholic drink. Of all of them, wine drinking Finnish men recorded the lowest mortality numbers because of lowered cardiovascular illness rates. The information clearly displayed that Finnish wine drinker had a thirty four percent lower mortality rate, beer drinkers were nine percent lower versus males who drank the “hard stuff”.

French wine drinkers consume about three to five glasses of wine daily and enjoy most favorable health gains, however, this amount of alcohol will negatively affect driver ability and suggests that a portion of the French population are drunk regularly. Even the bible discourages over indulgence in wine – tarrying too long with the wine. To this point, even with the enormous health advantages and anti aging properties of red wine, physicians have been unenthusiastic about extolling the medicinal value of red wine and do not “prescribe it” to their patients as if they condoned over indulgence in the nectar of the grape. There could well be a place for a red wine capsule – removing the alcohol leaving only wine solid material for ingestion. There is slow advancement in this field of research with inadequate human study.

The Japanese and French have each forged their own path to genuine longevity. Both countries are deep in one hundred year old plus – citizens. The world should be taking notice of how one nation is doing via diet and another by beverage. The rest of the world could benefit from some sushi and sake, red wine and baguettes!

Susceptibility to cancer is not a typical theory on aging, yet it accounts for a high degree of age-related mortality. Vulnerability to cancer pathologies rises substantially as people get older. It is true that cancer is not a cause to aging but rather a cause of aging, thereby putting cancer amidst the major challenges that need to be addressed in quest for longevity.

There exists a variety of cancers and they are all related to changes in numerous genetic tissues, yet these changes are eventually an outcome of other theories of anti-aging listed on “A Road Map to Anti-Aging Theories”. The complexity of aging makes it impossible to address ‘longevity’ from a single stance.

Based on statistical figures from World Health Organisation ‘WHO’, cancer accounted for a total of 13 percent of the death rate in 2007 which in nominal term is around 7.9 million people.

Yet, cancer can arise from changes occurring to a single cell, giving each cancer case particular characteristic. Body mechanisms such as cell differentiation, angiogenesis, apoptosis and proliferation influence the cancers ability to expand.

Cancerous tissues can propagate mutation and either block or activate several other genes. Cancer can generally be a root cause of cell senescence, mitochondrial and oxidative DNA damage. Moreover, chronic inflammation does not only cause cancer. It does also encourage the growth of cancerous tissues. However, a healthy immune system is a protective mechanism against cancer. It can detect and eliminate cancerous cells.

Research is showing that the genetic causes for cancer are much more complicated than expected. There is still a lot of research that needs to be undertaken to decrypt underlining causes of cancer. In the meantime, typical science approach is being used ‘Trial & error”. Gradual enhancement are being seen in treatment through techniques like radiation burning, surgery and a type of chemotherapy aimed at poisoning cancerous cells. Other more advanced approaches used are tumor telomerase inhibition and Tumor angiogenesis inhibitions are on the upfront.

Protecting/ Firewall against Susceptibility to Cancers
1.	Lifestyle

The basic lifestyle to minimize the potential risk to some degree of suffering from cancer is to refrain from contact to radioactivity, x-rays, chemicals such as paint removers that cause carcinogenesis. Being an active or passive smoker does also expose ‘you’ to a higher threat of developing cancerous tissues.

It is also necessary to wear sunglasses and not to consume particular foods that have carcinogenic addictives. Foods with a low glycemic index are recommended together with regular exercise as for women physical exercise tends to reduce the risk of breast cancer as well as promoting general health.

2.	Medical Supplement/ Firewalls against Susceptibility to Cancers

The very widespread combination of supplements must be accommodated to protect against cancer. All various antioxidants that have been prescribed for the anti-aging theories on “A Road Map to Anti-Aging Theories” do also induce cancerous mutation.

Vitamin D-3 has various anti-cancer characteristics. Curcumin and Resveratrol induce P53 gene and this alleviates cancer cells by forcing apoptosis. Yet, lycopene, olive leaf extract, OPC and Green tea have the same effects. The mechanism that these substances operate through is highly intricate like curcumin which actually regulates neurogliaoma cells’ proliferation. This is achieved by gene expression that goes through various roots such as cycle control, oxidative stress, metabolism and DNA transcription.

Recently research on phytochemicals (substances in plants) has been enlarged. The list of phytochemicals that is being scrutinized is large; rosemary, oregano, green tea, garlic, broccoli, red hot pepper, chocolate, turmeric, sage and coffee. They all tend to have counter-cancer properties. Scientific research is going towards an understanding of their therapeutic relation to gene expression.

Other known firewalls that have inhibiting properties against cancer are Omega-3 oil, Selenium and Magnesium. Selenium has a specific approach to cause apoptotic demise of tumor cells. Magnesium according to research decreases the risk of colon cancer. Recent research shows that atragalus does also address colon cancer. To mention once again, lycopene, vitamin D-3 and curcumin are proving to protect against cancer according to actual clinical trials.

Carcinogenetic processes and inflammation are related to NF-kappaB Cell signals. Recent research shows how NF-kB signals are concerned with inflammatory disease like cancer irritation, arthritis and inflammation in the heart. Yet, 39 substances are available to address NF-kB inhibition. This can thereby diminish the menace of inflammation and cancer concerns.
