People are delighted to see 2011 fading away, with great optimism that 2012 will be a very good year.

According to a survey carried out by an Associated Press-GfK, it was revealed that 62 percent of the participants were optimistic about 2012, and 78 percent were highly optimistic of the New Year. This is in-line with how most of us experience New Year’s Eve, very few of us emphasis on resolution; the focus is rather on the positive things that will happen in the upcoming year.

Nevertheless, New Year’s resolutions are often only temporary targets that fade away as days go by. On the other hand, optimism does really work; it helps to instill healthy behaviours that last.

A large study involving more than 100,000 women, found that women who were optimistic had a 9 percent lower risk of suffering from heart disease and the risk of dying from any other cause was also 14 percent less, as per the eight year follow-up of the study. Women who nurtured hostile thoughts had a 16 percent higher risk of dying of any disease, over the period of the study.

There are other similar studies that have revealed similar results. In one research, it was found that optimists have a 55 percent lower risk of dying from any cause as well as 23 percent less risk of dying from heart diseases in comparison to pessimistic people Elderly men who were optimistic were 50 percent less prone to heart disease in comparison to pessimistic people, this was revealed in a 15 years study. There are dozens of study suggesting that being optimistic does really help you to stay healthy.

Social scientists say that being optimistic help to foster healthy behaviours, yet there are some negative aspects associated. Optimists do often think positively when associating health risk. For instance, they assume that their sexual partner doesn’t have STDs. The optimist may frequently undergo medical check-up just because of the presence of the positive attitude of believing that he/she is healthy.

In addition, optimists do commonly look forward to positive outcomes, yet they tend to forget to execute action to realize such outcomes. This is why optimists need a wellness coach to facilitate in the implementation of a strong healthy plan, to achieve these positive outcomes.

Nonetheless, behavioural changes from being optimistic to pessimistic alter in face of various actions. For instance, someone can be optimistic when learning about healthy behaviours and thereafter fell pessimistic and frustrated when really implementing these healthy bahaviours. Maintaining the state of thought isn’t always easy.

So in order to categories, someone as being ‘An Optimistic Individual’ scientists associated it to a assertive goal-directed behaviour and tenacity. An optimist will constantly try to succeed irrespective of the hurdles that may prevail.

According to a new research, sex seems to be an important determinant of longevity. In other words, Good Sex Can Increase your Life Expectancy.

A group of research from University of California, San Diego found that good sex can add up to a decade of life expectancy. Satisfying sex can help people in their 80’s to enjoy a high quality of life.

From Stein Institute for Research on Aging at the University of California, San Diego the researchers found that sexual satisfaction for elderly women was highly correlated to successful aging as well as highly quality of life.

This study was released online in the Journal of the American Geriatric Society. The report indicates that quality of life; successful aging and sexual satisfaction were strongly related even in age of 60 to 89 were women experience a decline in physical health.

In the research, 1,235 women who were involved in the Women’s Health Initiative (WHI) was scrutinized. WHI has been a major research program sponsored by the National Institute of health since 2003, focusing on finding causes of disability, death, and levels of quality of life for above 160 thousands vigorous post-menopausal women.

In research, groups were stratified into various age groups:

- 60 to 69 years
- 70 to 79 years
- 80 to 89 years

The researchers found at the end of the study that 61 percent of the group aged 80 and above said they had a satisfied sex life.

This same study was given emphasis when published in Indian News, giving various indicators of how sexual life contributes to longevity.

A recent TNN report suggests that regular sex enhance the brain power as well as positive hormone levels of an individual. In addition, orgasm has positive effects to the immune system as well. It strengthens the infection-fighting cells by approximately 20 percent.

Surprisingly, when couple experience orgasms they should hug each other as it facilitate the excretion of oxytocin hormone, which is directly linked to life expectancy.

It is really fascinating, cuddling increase’s people’s longevity, and in addition, being in relation reduces the risk of depression and chronic diseases.

According to the research, cuddling can increase life expectancy by as much as seven years.

Besides, satisfied sex keeps you physically and mentally healthy. It enhances your heart, brain and several hormones.

Men who are involved in at least three or more times of physical relationship in a week have 50 percent less risk of stroke and heart attack.

At any age, sex induces endorphins, which make you feel good and therefore lower stress significantly.

So simply by establishing planned sex a couple can increase their longevity by 2 to more years. Generally, sex is restricted to only night hours, but this need not necessary be so. Couples should enjoy sex whenever they feel the moment is right.

In addition, healthy food is essential for an individual to be able to have an enhanced sexual performance, and therefore, healthy food is directly and indirectly linked to longevity.

If you aren’t used to practice exercise, than sex can help you to boost the blood circulation and to burn some calories. Good sex can provide the same benefit as regular exercises.

So the prescription for planned sex provides the same benefits as regular exercises; 20 minutes of active sex can augment your metabolism and burn 30 calories.

For the case, of women sex does also reduce the risk of osteoporosis problems. Apparently, middle-aged women who have sex weekly have as much as 100 percent stronger protection to bones (Oestrogen levels) in contrast to women who do not have regular sex.

So a balance diet can boost the endurance, and thereafter help to promote satisfied sex experienced, which are pleasurable and at the same time fun.

It is a great strategy to add another decade to your life expectancy; satisfied sex life.

At Cardiff University and University of Warwick, researchers came to the conclusion that money can only make people happy if it does increase their social rank. Apparently, having a high pay doesn’t make people happy. In order for someone to consider himself/herself happy, the payout must be more than his work colleagues and friends.

The aim of the study was to understand people in richer countries haven’t become happier over the last 40 years, although economic growth has ensured a general increase in income.

The led author for the study was Chris Boyce from the University of Warwick’s Department of Psychology. He said that the higher an individual’s income is in comparison to peers determines people satisfaction. Yet, the average income or the nominal income amount doesn’t have any noticeable relation to people’s happiness. In the research, it was found that having an income of 1 million a year won’t make you happy if one of your friends earns more.

The research was published in the Journal Psychological Science under the title: “Money and Happiness: Rank of Income, Not Income, Affects Life Satisfaction.” The study involved 3 authors Gordon Brown and Chris Boyce from University of Warwick’s Department of Psychology as well as Simon Moore from Cardiff University.

The study gathered figures to understand the longitudinal pattern of British households; Data on life satisfaction as well as earnings from the British Household Panel Survey (BHPS) for a period of 7 years was used.

One part of the study evaluated the relation of life satisfaction to the amount of income earned. It was found that satisfaction was rather attached to the income position of an individual than compared to age, gender, education levels and/or geographical location of people.

It was concluded that if everyone in society was made richer, it would not help to augment the overall level of happiness – as the issue is not income in itself, it is rather having a higher income than other people that really matters.

A study at Stanford University of California – Santa Barbara found that a potential reason for increasing human longevity is because older men tend to chase younger women – which according to the research increase the longevity survival of the human species.

According to the evolutionary theory, people decease at old age after their reproductive cycle have been completed. According to Cedric Puleston, a doctoral in biological Science at Stanford says that for human, this is usually at the age of 55. However, fatherhood tends to end later for men, and they are faced with shortening mutations, which lead to the end of their reproduction cycle.

According to Puleston, giving birth to babies when you are in your 50s or 60s will not have any personal survival benefit. Yet, it does have an effect to the overall population. If such trend continues the longer reproduction capacity of men will be transmitted to women through their genes, which will have some positive effect on children of either males and females.

In an earlier study published, by Puleston & Micheal Gurven, who are assistant professors of anthropology at UCSB and Shripad Tuljapurkar, who is the Morrison Professor of Population Studies at Stanford, a research on “Why Men Matter: Mating Patterns Drive Evolution of Human Lifespan,” The aim was to clarify that human’s longevity doesn’t stop as soon as the female reproduction cycle ends.

There is something that has been connoted as the “wall of Death” – which literally means living longer than the reproductive years. In the recent 50 years, the question of why species continue to live despite that their reproducing abilities are gone, has been at the epic of scientific controversy.

The evolutionary theory suggested that as reproduction ends, the species will be affected by dangerous mutations that will reduce survival. Nevertheless, in the early hunter-gatherer society, which is a typical representation of early human mating patterns – 30 percent of the population lived beyond the age of 55 – or female lived-on even after their reproductive lifespan had ended.

In today’s society life expectancy is between 75 to 85 years in the developed world, with longevity increasing slowly – even for female following their menopause.

The Grandmother Effect – Grandmother hypothesis

According to Puleston, since 1966, the “grandmother hypothesis” has become the contemporary explanation why humans live beyond the age of 55. The grandmother effect was described by a British Evolutionary Biologist, William Hamilton, with a mathematical formula for the “wall of death.” The underlining idea of the hypothesis is that female improves the potential survival rate of children & grandchildren by simply living long enough to help them – and thereby enhancing their genes. Yet the representation of Hamilton’s mathematical calculation on genetic (grandmother effect) is a very complex description to demonstrate why people live to old age.

New Study – Including Males – Contrary to the Grandmother effect –

A new more complete study was recently released. The demarcation of this new study from previous research on human reproduction is that for the first-time information on males has been included into the picture. This inclusion allowed scientists to finally provide a response to the “wall of death” with an aligned answer to human mortality patterns. Previous study emphasised primarily on women (female survival and fertility rates) which led to incomplete conclusions.

Often, people dislike doing models, including both male and female, due to the high level of complexity. Yet, women and men’s fertility are contingent – the only difficulty is to comprehend the relation between the two. – for us to understand fully patterns of human evolution – reproduction is at the core – it holds answers to how we have evolved and also how we will evolve.

Longevity & Men

The study on both sexes showed that the longer male can reproduce the better is it for survival. Males older than the age of 50 years do commonly mate with younger females. This was usual in early human civilisation as well. According to Puleston, males being fertile at old age help to counteract on damaging cell mutation, for women beyond the menopause stage – this does thereby remove the so called “wall of death.”

This new research demonstrates how old-age male fertility eliminates the ‘wall of death’ that Hamilton stated. It is not necessary to rely on the grandmother effect or equal economic status – mortality will slowly increase as a function of longer male fertility.

In the research, the scientists gathered fertility and longevity information from two hunter-gatherer groups:

1.	Dobe – Kung of Kalahari
2.	Ache of Paraguay (amidst the world’s most segregated population)

Date of Forager-farmer was also included in the study:

1.	Yanomamo of Venezuela and Brazil
2.	Tsimani – Bolivia (indigenous group)

2.	Stop Aging with A Hunter-Gatherer Diet and Lifestyle

Puleston said that these four groups had a lifestyle similar to that of our ancestors. Their living habits are also very similar. In addition, some village farm in Gambia was included as well as a modern group of Canadians to give universal understanding of contemporary to modern society.

In the traditional societies, the gender age gap between partners was 5 to 15 years. Currently, In Europe and the United States the average age gap between partners is two years. It is a general pattern that men are older than women during marriage. The age gap differs from one group to another, but remained true across the populations.

For all the groups involved in the study men were sexually reproductive at a more advanced age in comparison to females. They also had a slower decrease in fertility contrary to female fertility, which ends by menopause.

In all the groups involved, they stopped having more children in their 50s. However, in special cases, high-status males tended to reproduce to the age 70. Mostly, men who lived in societies that favoured polygamy were reproducing in their 70s.

However, old male fertility is equally present in societies that encourage serial monogamy. Men are more likely to remarry, and are fertile at this advanced age. Fertility of elder men has been present in human history as to reflect mortality patterns and increase in longevity.

The “grandmother hypothesis” might be accurate – but to have a more precise explanation male fertility needs to be elucidated. According to Puleston, males reproduce at a later age with younger females have a positive effect on population longevity.

A new study finds that exercise is essential for enhanced abilities and healthiness for elders.

A new study has discovered that enhanced physical abilities and health is more important than appearance for older Americans taking up exercise.

The study, which was published in the online journal of Annals of Behavioral Medicine, examined more than 1800 people of both sexes, with an average age of 69. None of the participants in the study had ever exercised regularly.

The participants in the study were asked to do thirty minutes of moderate to vigorous exercise most days of the week for approximately five to six months. This exercise included long walks and various classes.

At the beginning of the study, the participants were asked to rate their satisfaction with their level of health and appearance. Most were either dissatisfied or neutral on both counts. At the end of the study, however, most participants were either neutral or a little satisfied with both their new-found health and appearance.

This effect was particularly pronounced in men, who found that being able to move more easily was the best by-product of the new exercise regime. The suggestion is that, with advancing age, a premium is placed on a functioning body over an attractive one.

However, women, the half of the species always more concerned with their appearance, did not place such a high importance on their newfound mobility. Women were still more pleased that their bodies become more attractive with regular exercise than their overall increased mobility.

Better results and happiness at the end of the study were linked with the feeling of youth, a lowered body mass and a greater amount of physical activity. The more the participant exercised, the more satisfaction they felt. This satisfaction increased their overall level of happiness and self-esteem. Interestingly, these feelings were also linked with race.

The study confirmed that Caucasians were more likely than African-American’s to report a greater satisfaction with their appearance at the end of the study. The ultimate reasons for such a result are unclear. However, the researchers say that it may have to do with Caucasians having more room for general improvement.

Regardless, those following the study, in particular, Colin Milner as the founder of the International Council on Active Aging, are pleased with the results. He stated that vanity fades with age, and at the end of the day “it is more important that I am able to get up and walk and play with my grand kids… than my overall appearance.”

It doesn’t really matter if you are a few kilos heavier; the benefit of being able to do what you really want to do is something that makes us happy.

At La Jolla Sheraton Hotel, Dr Hillel Mazansky gives a fascinating insight into how optimum health can be harnessed with decaffeinated green tea, vitamin D and with an active body and mind.

On the 21st of June 2011, Dr. Hilell Mazansky talked about guided imagery at Sheraton Hotel in La Jolla. This South African Medical Practitioner has around 40 years of experience. He says that the key for health is found in Guided Imagery & Nutrition.

He believes that guided imagery mixed up with exercise, and nutrition should be the main prescription as a cure for patients. In other words, no medical drug should be prescribed to treat patients.

According to Dr. Hilell, reducing the consumption of drugs will prevent the manifold drawbacks associated with medications. He solemnly believes that Guided Imagery, Nutrition & exercise is the key to a longer and healthier life.

Meditational sessions are practices to identify trouble areas. Thereafter, patients are trained to treat the ‘trouble areas’ with their mind. The mind has the power to heal several different types of conditions ranging from cancer to obesity.

Currently, we are only utilizing 10 percent of our brain. Neuroscientists are aware that we have a store of unused brain power. According to modern science if we train our brain, guided imagery can help us to cure and heal various health complications.

The process is done by the focus on the abbreviated word PNI. PNI stands for the linking up:

-	P = Psycho (brain)
-	N = Neuro (neurological system)
-	I = Immunology (the Body’s defense system)

Mazansky says that this practice is not really a preventative strategy it is more of a curative approach of healing. People are succumbed with psychological scars that do often lead to chronic pain. The only way to get cured is to start fresh.

Dr. Mazansky has now been engaged in practice of guided imagery and innovative medicine for around 20 years. In addition, he has been involved in family medicine 1969, with a medical degree obtained from South Africa. In 1977, he immigrated to Columbus, Ohio to start his general practice sessions.

Now, he is doing in depth-study in guided imagery & longevity medicine.

It has recently been found that Delhi’s air contains further noxious substances. The Massachusetts Institute of Technology (MIT) has established that the level of toxic Respirable Suspended Particulate Matter (RSPM) in Delhi’s air is twice the national limit. At the same time, it is six times higher than the boundary set by the World Health Organisation (WHO). Therefore, cities transgress both local and global standards.

RSPMs are far more deleterious to health since they are less detectable than Suspended Particulate Matter (SPM), which refers to all hazardous substances. RSPMs are less than 100 micrometers in diameter.

Eventually, due to their diminutive size, RSPMs can infiltrate further into the lungs. Subsequently, citizens who breathe Delhi’s unsafe air are more prone to lung cancer, heart diseases, chronic bronchitis and asthma. A rather alarming fact is that individuals’ longevity is shortened in India’s polluted cityscapes.

The RSPM level in Delhi is as follows:

-120 micrograms per cubic metre instead of the 60 micrograms accepted by National Ambient Air Quality Standard.

-Moreover, these 120 micrograms are much higher than Tokyo: 60 micrograms and Kuala Lumpur: 90. The limit set by WHO is 20 micrograms per cubic metre.

-A prior study in 1997 indicated that a surge to 100 micrograms per cubic metre increased the daily death toll by 2.3 %.

MIT has worked in collaboration with the Union environment ministry and the Supreme Court. The research entitled Improving Human Health through a Market-Friendly Emissions Scheme was released during a conference on Global Environment and Disaster Management.

Both environmental experts from India and the US affirm that this substance is extremely detrimental to health. Adults and children contract deadly diseases including severe lung infection. Undoubtedly, infants are the most exposed ones. According to WHO, there is no real figure as a minimum level of toxic substances.

Anumita Roychowdhury, executive director, research and advocacy, Centre for Science and Environment, states that more stringent measures are required to minimise pollution level in cities. This is because RSPMs levels have been soaring since 2007. After a brief period of decline in 2002, it was found that these harmful substances rose again in the forthcoming years.

Although particulates emerge come from varied sources, the MIT study asserts the main culprits for RSPM are fumes from industries. It is agreed that controlling emissions from these larger sources are more practical than the countless vehicles in cities.

Consequently, the MIT study suggests market friendly particulate emissions plan to enhance air quality. For instance, part of this scheme would include the paying of fines by industrial plants and other vast polluters. Indubitably, polluters will review the level of toxic fumes contaminating the air.

Arguably, it seems that market forces have more influence than government agencies. Since industries are essentially profit oriented, any loss of money incurred by fines will act as a deterrent to pollution.

The Nefarious nature of RSPMs

•	They can be carcinogenic.
•	Premature death rate is thereby increased.
•	Cardiac and respiratory problems are worsened in the short term.
•	Onset of lung cancer is possible in the long term.
•	Fine particles and other air pollutants may cause asthma.

Frank Herrelko,a well-known athlete of his age, came from a humble family has won 350 medals during his career as a sportsman. Recently, he turned 98 and lives in Lower Gwynedd,PA.

Frank’s childhood days were hard, as he was forced to quit school and work in the coal mine to earn his living. He admired and respected his father who helped him in going through the hurdles of life with a positive attitude and seriousness.

A small incident in the coal mine intrigued him to a great deal about life’s uncertainty. As frank threw few stones at the mine rats, his father stopped him saying, rats could suspect danger and be helpful to mankind at times. As one of the rats took away its babies one by one, immediately Frank and his father left their places to a safety one. They were lucky that time as the roof, where they had been collapsed into several pieces. Thank God! The rats saved their lives.

Frank Herrelko’s son, David helped him in accomplishing an autobiography which was published in 2008 as ” Frank Herrelko:A Life in Full “. The book explains about his career in the Army and Air Force over a period of 34 yrs from which he retired as a colonel. Other than his sportsmanship, the book also talks about his involvement in social service activities as a young medic, by aiding the under-privileged or the downtrodden to restore their health. He has been portrayed as skilful and talented at the music level too.

He danced with Marlene Dietrich in Iceland that became popular and played trumpet for “Ruffles and Flourishes” to welcome the King George of England to the United States.

Even at the age of 98 he is extremely enthusiastic and energetic. He took care of his physique so well, followed a strict diet and worked out on few exercises in order to maintain a strong, healthy and active body. Of-course, that served him well as a super-athlete in his future. He did actively take part in a number of varied high level sports competitions, one of which is the ‘ Olympics ‘ in track and field events such as race-walking, the 50-meter dash, the high jump, long jump, triple jump, shot put, discus, javelin, and hammer throw and so on. He won 9 gold medals altogether in track and field events and bowling

He studied the hook-and corner of sports and learnt from his many experiences as well. Thereby, he appeared in a sports magazine, as one of the “Faces in the Crowd.”

He became a super sportsman once his career graph started moving up and up, and here he is now holding 350 medals in hand. Age made no difference to him as he actively participates in bowling with his nearby residents. His hobbies are sewing and mending for his friends and neighbours. He also gives haircuts for a change, as he is a trained barber.

For him, taking good care of his health and keeping himself fit, is a must factor in life. He accuses people who cannot maintain good healthy. One of his secrets is to take two eggs with bacon or ham for breakfast and for lunch, a soup. Supper could be any kind of meal along with 1 or 2 two glasses of port wine, which is a must. Not only is he physically active but also mentally.

Marrying to his wife Edie, was one of the best things that happened, to whom he was married to for over 68 years, as she passed away last June at 94. Herrelko is now a great-grandfather to his twelve great-grandchildren. He has four children, six grandchildren and twelve great-grandchildren.

What a contended life would be to think of Frank Herrelko, as a super sportsman and a super human.

People are having a longer and healthier life now in developed countries. Some are living a decade longer than their parents, not because aging as been retarded or other factors have changed but simply because people are more conscious about living healthy.

People have longevity, because they get older in a better health condition, said James Vaupel, a writer of a review magazine called Nature, published on 25th of last March. However, some diseases can still happen, like in the past, being actually the same as then, such as heart disease and mental disorders. These maladies get even worse if carried forward to an advanced age.

Improvement health care, depend on efforts of public health as well as advancement of science. This was said by James Vauple too, leading the Center of University of Duke, and teaching periodically at the Planck Institute for Demographic Research and relative studies of Rostock, Germany, and Public Health Institute of Demark.

For the last decade, longevity of people has increased by 2.5 years per decade, or around 6 hours per day. Possibility of death increases with age; the pleasant thing is that after 110 years, the risk of death is flattened. However, the more anxious or concerned news, is that the death risk after 110 years remains at a constant rate of only 50%.

Vaupel said also: ’Children born after 2000 will probably reach 100 years., if things go on being at the same rate as two centuries ago, in regard to increase in human lifespan. In 22nd century, more than 50% of children born today will probably be centenarians, assuming that the pace of longevity continues at a constant rate. Vaupel also added: This possibility raises some questions, until it becomes a reality.

What will these figures mean for public services and social life as well as for economy?

Can death be further delayed, after a certain age, and why do women have longer life, compared to men? On average in 7 aged individuals, six are women and 1 is man.

It may be time to think better of our life and structuring conditions, said Vauper further. If people are going to live beyond 100 years, and feel good in general by 90-95 years, then, they‘ll be able to be involve in work, education and bringing up children. This would introduce radical changes to how society is managed. For life extension, young people could work less, and fewer hours a day, so that the population employed, could have a more flexible working schedule.

The 21st century, was a century of health production, and distribution; time for changing work conditions in the 21st century, and less work production for young people.

A recent study conducted by Dying Matter, says that most people die in the hospital and not at home. The survey goes into details about who really want to live forever. According to the findings 15 percent of the people involved in the study wanted to live forever.

It is interesting to note that younger people are certainly more enthusiastic in the quest to immorality than older individuals. In the age group 18-24, 21 percent of wants immorality while for those above 65 only 12 percent; most people fear the declining effects as one reach, his or her 80s.

In the quest towards longevity, and the experience of aging people do gradually believe that quality is more important than longevity; 81 percent of the cohort aged 65 and above, values quality of life over longevity while for the group 18 to 24 years, only 58 percent believed so.

The study also suggests that there was a group of the participant who refused to discuss death, in relation, to the option of living forever.

In general (83%), it was revealed that people are rather more afraid of dying in pain, in comparison to be informed that they are only dying (67 %). Yet, there seems as if death is a taboo as people preferred to refer to death with euphemisms such as ‘passed away’ instead of using the word death itself.

In addition, only a minority of people discussed their preferred type of funeral, while 36 percent of the participant had never mentioned whether they have a testament. Another 60 percent had never addressed the issue of where they would prefer to die.

From the charity Marie Curie, Thomas Hughes-Hallett, says that the finding reflected the unwillingness of people to talk about their death. It has also been found that most people would like to die at home, but still the majority of people will continue to die in hospitals. Solutions, such as consultation between family members and doctors could help patients to achieve their preferred choice of where to die.

The fears of death were classified as followings, in respect to percentages:
1.	A total of 59 percent feared to die in Hopital
2.	A total of 62 percent were frighten to die alone
3.	A total of 61 feared to be victim of a violent crime
4.	A total of 38 feared redundancy
5.	A total of 41 people feared bankruptcy
6.	A total of 39 percent feared divorce

The Chief Executive of Dying Matters, Eve Richardson, says that people should be given more autonomy to handle their personal death. This was deeply discussed in the 2008 strategy paper. We are aware that people die every minute, yet the finding suggests that most of us prefer not to discuss death. According to professionals in the industry, people diagnosed with a terminal illness could be given the choice of how and where to die.

At Dying Matters, another member Professor Mayur Lakhani, a GP says that doctors should be trained to query on how people would like to die. He also claims that even doctors themselves are inhibited to talk about death. Yet, these are things that can be handled with training.
