A new study finds that exercise is essential for enhanced abilities and healthiness for elders.

A new study has discovered that enhanced physical abilities and health is more important than appearance for older Americans taking up exercise.

The study, which was published in the online journal of Annals of Behavioral Medicine, examined more than 1800 people of both sexes, with an average age of 69. None of the participants in the study had ever exercised regularly.

The participants in the study were asked to do thirty minutes of moderate to vigorous exercise most days of the week for approximately five to six months. This exercise included long walks and various classes.

At the beginning of the study, the participants were asked to rate their satisfaction with their level of health and appearance. Most were either dissatisfied or neutral on both counts. At the end of the study, however, most participants were either neutral or a little satisfied with both their new-found health and appearance.

This effect was particularly pronounced in men, who found that being able to move more easily was the best by-product of the new exercise regime. The suggestion is that, with advancing age, a premium is placed on a functioning body over an attractive one.

However, women, the half of the species always more concerned with their appearance, did not place such a high importance on their newfound mobility. Women were still more pleased that their bodies become more attractive with regular exercise than their overall increased mobility.

Better results and happiness at the end of the study were linked with the feeling of youth, a lowered body mass and a greater amount of physical activity. The more the participant exercised, the more satisfaction they felt. This satisfaction increased their overall level of happiness and self-esteem. Interestingly, these feelings were also linked with race.

The study confirmed that Caucasians were more likely than African-American’s to report a greater satisfaction with their appearance at the end of the study. The ultimate reasons for such a result are unclear. However, the researchers say that it may have to do with Caucasians having more room for general improvement.

Regardless, those following the study, in particular, Colin Milner as the founder of the International Council on Active Aging, are pleased with the results. He stated that vanity fades with age, and at the end of the day “it is more important that I am able to get up and walk and play with my grand kids… than my overall appearance.”

It doesn’t really matter if you are a few kilos heavier; the benefit of being able to do what you really want to do is something that makes us happy.

A recent newsletter of the International Plant Nutrition Institute underlined how crops nutrition can raise their content in major categories of proteins, vitamins and minerals.

The use of management tools can help farmers in diminishing the environmental impact. These tools allow the optimum source, timing and placement of fertilizers – nitrogen and other proteins, vitamins and minerals – in order to improve the quality of the products.

The nutritional value of nitrogen fertilizers used on corn and wheat has scientifically been proven, but the process needs some work. Nitrogen is a major component of proteins; cereals such as corn and wheat register higher amounts of protein produced after being treated with fertilizers. IPNI stated that corn and wheat nutritional value should be limited to lowering lysine – an essential amino acid. Another advantage of using nitrogen fertilizers is the increased concentrations of carotenoids; hence, increased health-potential and market values of fruits and vegetables.

IPNI also states that colour, texture, sweetness, folic acid, beta-carotene and vitamin C contents of watermelons and cantaloupes muskmelons is enhanced after potassium and sulphur use. In the same time, soybeans isoflavone, as well as tomatoes and grapefruits lycopene content increases are evident.

According to IPNI, third world countries such as Nigeria and Bangladesh – with a high rate of malnutrition – need to improve crops quality by nutrient supplements. They also need to become aware of the positive impact that plant nutrition has on human health, as the only way to upgrade their agricultural systems.

Upgrading crops can help people in developing countries to live longer.

Experts say that 15 minutes of exercise per day is all you need to increase your longevity by three years. So you might no longer be able to say that you are too busy to enjoy exercise.

A relatively new study, released in the Lancet Medical Journal, highlighted that 1 in 9 cancer-related deaths could have been avoided if the patient were involved in 15 minutes of daily exercise.

In Taiwan, at the National Health Research Institute, Chief Researcher, Chi-Pang Wen, in association with China Medical University Hospital have been scrutinizing ways to improve and enhance quality of life.

Chi-Pang said that patients could aspire to do more exercise if doctors would provide a manageable duration of recommended exercise activities per day.

Information on Study

The longitudinal study that lasted for 12-years, involved 416175 Taiwanese people. The study was carried out in the period 1996 to 2008. In the research groups of people were evaluated in respect to the volume of exercise they practiced, and this data was thereafter correlated to risk of dying from cancer and life expectancy..

It was found that people who had a significant risk of heart attacks, and heart disease would experience strong benefits from a moderate level of exercise per day. Currently, the World Health Organisation is suggesting that 30 minutes of daily exercise will generate ‘substantial health benefits.’ The recent Lancet study demonstrated that small steps can slowly lead to a longer and healthier life.

The study highlighted that engaging people for the recommended moderate-intense exercise of 30 minutes daily is cumbersome, especially for a consistent period of five days a week.

It was concluded that 90 minutes of exercise per week would increase longevity for women by 3 years while for man by 2.5 years.

Previous study, suggested that 30 minutes of exercise per day would increase life by 3 to 4 years. So, starting slowly could motivate people to become healthier.

It is also common that people who start to exercise 15 minutes per day on a regular basis, will soon increase their time spent on exercising.

At Stellenbosch University Department of Sports Science, a fitness lecturer, Sherman Baatjes stated that “One can never say that we are too busy to exercise.” This is especially true, when only 15 minutes of exercise is needed daily.

You can adopt a healthy lifestyle, using a slow transition approach; it is not necessary to start a regular exercise scheme, at ones. A stroll at the beach could be a good start; it would help you to circulate some fresh air in your lungs.

One of the milestones of physical fitness exercise is to encourage lower-limb muscle endurance, and walking at the beach matches those needs. So why not start small but with big results.

Baatjes added that walking at the beach will soon be easy. At that time, you can slowly replace it by cycling, jogging and/or swimming.

When walking became easy, Baatjes said, it could be “replaced by jogging, cycling, or swimming.”

There is a growing belief that calorie restriction is the key to longevity. Dr. John B Carrigan is now in search for a potential drug that might enlighten the quest for longer human lifespan.

The debates on calorie restriction are swinging from one side to the other. Is it really the elixir of youth or just another anti-aging search? In the recent years, we are increasingly hearing more contradictory conclusion on obesity, eating disorder and diets, what is the key to longevity?

It is certain that the answer isn’t straightforward. In the world of science calorie restriction, is being proven to be one of the only confirmed ways to lengthen our longevity. But, the full story of science has not been fully clarified; there are empirical studies that refute the strong claimed benefits of calorie restriction (CR).

In 1935, a nutritionist at Cornell University, Dr. Clive McCay, concluded that depriving our body from the full energy need could actually increase the longevity of at least mice. At that time, it was found that if mice were fed with 30 percent less than the control groups, they tended to live 40 percent longer in compared to their counterparts. The study on mice CR identified that calorie restriction improved mice immunity to disease, and they became equally more physically active.

The experiment conducted by Dr. McCay has been replicated on a dozen of other species, like roundworms, fruit flies and other mice. The main conclusion of these studies, is that CR, alters biochemical pathways to either Off or ON modes, which enhances insulin sensitivity, cardiovascular function, resistance to cellular stress and decrease inflammation and muscle wasting that occurs with age. The result is that aging is delayed, equally are age-linked diseases such as cancer and diabetes. In general, CR has scientifically shown that CR can increase our longevity with an estimated 30 percent.

Another, famous writer and researcher on calorie restriction was ‘Dr. Roy Walford’ a pathologist from the University of California, Los Angeles. He spent his last three decades to practice a calorie restriction regime. However, he passed-away in 2004, suffering from ‘Lou Gehrig’s disease’, at the age of 79 years. So, upcoming studies which were released suggested that long-term calorie restriction does lead to faster progression of amyotrophic lateral sclerosis (Lou Gherig’s disease) even in mice models, which can ironically reduce lifespan.

Weight Loss – Advocates of Dr. Walford’s – legacy

Brian M Delaney who is the President of Calorie Restriction Society in the US says that there is thousands of people practicing calorie restriction. However, it should be noted that CR is different from common weight-loss diets. In contrast to weight loss diets, which are mainly meant for people who are overweight the CR diet is aimed to extend lifespan. The reduction in weight is simply a side-advantage of the CR diet.

CR is not about increasing exercise, or maintaining calorie intake, or losing weight. It is a full-fledge health programme, aimed to follow Food and Drug Administration’s recommended intake of 20 to 30 percent nutrition level.

The BMI (Body Mass Index) score that Dr. Walford aimed at was below 20. Another supporter of Calorie restriction regimes is Dr. Luigi Fontana, who is the Director of the Division of Nutrition & Aging at Istituto Superiore Di Sanita (Italian National Institute of health) and equally an Associate Professor of Medicine at Washington University in St. Louis. He investigated members from the CR Society, and published a very insightful report in the Proceeding of the National Academy of Science, in 2004. It was concluded that CR leads to a comfortable metabolic rate which reduces the potential rate and risk of developing heart diseases to nearly zero.

Monkey Study – Species Almost Like Humans

The most relevant CR animal study conducted, in correlation to humans, is the 20-year CR studied done on our genetic neighbours (rhesus monkeys). The results were flagrant. In 2009, it was published that monkeys on a normal diet had a 50 percent survival rate in contrast to CR-treated monkeys with an 80 percent survival rate. The appearance of the monkeys was even more fascinating. The monkey on a normal diet looked significantly older than the one ones on CR diets.

Picture:

Is CR Really That Good?

CR is according to scientific evidence the secret to longevity. However, the studies have their own weaknesses. If we evaluate epidemiological data, we cannot say that the thinnest people have the longest lifespan. A few years ago, a long-term research conducted by Tohoku University’s Graduate School of Medicine on middle-aged & elderly people gave contradictory findings. People who were slightly overweight in their 40s lived on average 6 to 7 years more in comparison to their thinner counterparts. Thinner people lived on average 5 years less than obese people.

In order to make the study more comparative, thinner people who died earlier from sickness or bad lifestyles such as smoking were eliminated. However, the result was still the same. Thus, calorie restriction appears to have various effects not to re-mention Lou Gehrig’s disease.

CR Society Warnings

Announcement from the CR Society has highlighted that some advocate of CR tends to go beyond reasonable limits into unhealthy CR practices. Extreme CR practice has been associated with psychological disturbance such as food fantasies, anorexia and bingeing.

Insight on CR Theory

Richard A. Miller and his co-workers from the University of Michigan, in 2009, found that rampaycin (a bacterial natural products), blocks TOR kinase and this tend to increase the lifespan of mice. So scientists now believe that inhibiting TOR is the key to extending longevity – it doesn’t matter whether it is done through CR, Rapamycin Treatment or Genetic Mutation. The blocking of TOR reduces cells expansion; reducing ribosome production, amino acid transport and protein synthesis.

In addition, the organism is also strengthened and become resilient against various forms of stress.

Going into more depth, Fontana found that Vegetarians, who practiced CR diets experienced more consistent delay in aging. This suggests that it is not only calorie restriction that is required but maybe a protein restriction diet to increase longevity.

Drugs – Copy Study Effects

The pharmaceutical industry is investing huge in mimetics of these CR benefits. It might be possible to induce the CR benefits without even reducing consumption. Simply consuming CR supplements might be enough. There are already a few CR mimetics supplements on the market but non-of the drugs have demonstrated proven longevity benefits for humans.

The most marketed and popular CR mimetic is the resveratrol. Yet, there is a lack of empirical results purporting that it really increases the lifespan of mammals.

An early research showed that resveratrol increased the lifespan of mice who were on high-fat diets. Yet, the media highlighted that the study showed no relevant figures for mice being on a typical diet.

In general, resveratrol is considered as safe and healthy. It is also naturally present in blueberries, peanuts and grapes.

Most studies suggest that CR is safe and effective. However, the debate on whether eating less or taking pills will lead to a healthier and longer life will continue for years. Some people are even questioning whether it is worth living longer if you have to forego peppercream sauce and steaks.

Recent study claims that bariatric surgery does not guarantee obese people to have an extended lifespan

In accordance to a recent publication in JAMA, it cannot be stated that undergoing a bariatric surgery brings a reduction in mortality, numerous years following the surgery.

Even though evidence shows that weight-loss surgery does bring a reduction in weight as well as decreases diabetes, the seriously obese and aged male patients who were under observation showed no sign to live longer due to such procedures.

The study is supposed to be communicated at the Academy Health Annual Research Meeting.

It is known that for those who suffer from obesity severe, bariatric surgery can prove to be among the most efficient ways to decrease weight. Bariatric surgery is most commonly known as gastric bypass. The latter produces a little stomach pouch, which is responsible to limit the intake of food.

The study was carried out at the Veteran Affairs medical centers. The study comprised of 850 senior citizens who had undergone bariatric surgery during the period of January 2000 to December 2006.

When the authors made a comparison against the raw rates, the mortality rates of patients who had undergone surgery was lower with 6.8% against 15.2% past six years.

However, when a comparison was made between the 850 veterans and 1694 like patients who had not undergone bariatric surgery, they noticed that the surgery was, in fact, not considerably linked to the reduction of mortality.

The conclusion drawn by Matthew Maciejewski from the Durham VA Medical Center as well as his colleagues was that it does not seem that bariatric surgery is linked to an increase in survival. This was the finding established after 6.7 years the subjects had their surgery.

A key food substance for longevity is Broccoli. We constantly hear new buzzes about the health benefits of Broccoli. It isn’t junk news, but rather pure proven research findings.

Studies have found that Broccoli contains some unique cholesterol-lower potential, when cooked as steamed. In addition the fiber-associated parts play an even more fundamental role in putting together bile acids. This is something very important for the digestive system. It should also be noted that raw broccoli does have this cholesterol lower effect but with less extent in comparison to steamed broccoli.

On a deeper, level Broccoli have strong detoxification effects on the body. There are three components known as glucobrassicin, glucoraphanin and gluconasturtiian found in the plant. These combined components do not only help to eliminate toxification. It enhances the detox process itself; such as eliminating and neutralising contaminants.

There are other critical components in Broccoli such as vitamin A, D, K, and Flavonid (kaempferol)

It is interesting to note that according to recent studies, even children like consuming Broccoli. Yet, it is of great essence that vegetables are properly cooked. For example, a broccoli is considered overcooked if it becomes mush and very soft. The recommended time for steaming a broccoli floret that has been cut into four pieces is 5 minutes.

Here is a list of some of the strong antioxidant and vitamins found in Broccoli.

Recently, the longevity of a 114-year-old Brazilian woman was claimed to be a result of her eating habits. She consumes fruits and bread for breakfast.

Ms Maria Gomes Valentim, who is currently the world’s oldest living human, according to the Guinness World Records, confirms a common belief of longevity – wine is good for longevity.

The Daily Mail reported that she consumes nips of wine on occasional circumstances.

The grand-daughter, Jane Ribeiro Moraes, said to a local newspaper, that the Brazil’s national dish is something that her grandma adores. The disk contains various cuts of chicken empanada pastries, salted pork meat and hearty bean stew, together with a searing sauce.

The Guinness book of record confirms that Ms. Valentim, at the age of 114 years and 313 days is as older than the former American, Besse Cooper by a total of 48 days.

A very famous saying is that you are what you eat but not if you eat too much. For longevity, you can find many pills and schemes in the market, but only one thing has actually been proven good for long life, except for genetic manipulation. This one thing includes only and only eating less, because pills can cause damage to your body. According to the research of a biologist and demographer, S.Jay Olshansky, ‘there is no anti-aging drug’. He says that though some products are getting some good response from their users, they should still be tested in a science lab.

CR which means caloric restriction can affect a lot on our weight. It was found that CR can increase the life span, even sometimes it can double the life span.CR isn’t the same as a diet, in fact, it means to avoid certain oily, sugary and high calorie food. But Dr David, a professor. At the University of Arkansas for medical sciences says that only some people opt for low calorie-diets. He says that we cannot be hungry all, and for a long time. CR is not very easy though it is easy to say but difficult to describe.

Science On Human And The Rats

The advice of CR for long life is not a new one. A nutritionist named Clive M. McCay did a test on rats in the lab, giving them low calorie diets. It was also found after the research by another professor, “Walford that those rats which were given the low cal diet lived up to 56 months, which is equal to 165 years in human”. Walford got great attention by taking CR diet. For 30 years he took 1600 calories daily, whereas a normal American takes 2500 calories daily. He used to take protein shake together banana as breakfast and vegetable salad in lunch. For dinner he opted for a fish piece or lean meat. Walford had only 130 pounds weight with 5 feet 9 inches height. He wanted to live up to 120 years but he died at the age of 79. He had a neurological disease called amyotrophic lateral sclerosis. The conclusion was he lived only 5 years more than the average Americans age.

CR test was done on many other animals; dogs, fish and spiders. It was also shown that CR changed the aging process and added years to the lifespan organisms. Richard Weindruch from the University of Wisconsin said that it will take decades to prove that CR can help lead to longer lifespan but researches are suggesting that it does.

It has been deduced that CR can provide several benefits towards longevity such as:

•	CR can slow down the cell division rate.
•	CR lowers sugar levels and glucose levels in the blood.
•	CR boosts response in immune system and also increases the protective hormones level.
•	CR also reduces the damage as mitochondrial.

According to such theories CR does create healthy cells in our body. This does thereby reduce the causes of disease.

When Less Is More

This is very obvious that if we eat less and a balanced diet, we get healthy. Some scientists from Albert Einstein College of Medicine in New York said that CR rats had only one fourth fats in the body as compared to other rats. This is a good result as extra fat in the body does produce hormones, which further affects the body functions. They found that it was difficult for the fat rats to metabolize sugar properly. This caused an increased level of blood sugar and lowered the insulin sensitivity. It was a sign of reduced risk of diabetes.

The same study is now being applied to humans. Studies are suggesting that CR if practiced for 15 years can reduce the risk of diabetes and arteries disease.CR does help to delay aging by reducing the risk of serious diseases.

Yet, a person’s age depends on nature but CR can protect people from serious illnesses such as diabetes, heart attack and stroke. A paper written by Mark P. Mattson, a neuroscientist at the National Institute on Aging in Baltimore, described that, CR develops proteins and also increases the emerge of healthy cells. It also supports the growth of nerves, and these factors can protect brain damage. Other related studies claim that CR reduces the causes of Alzheimer’s disease and exposure to oxidative stress.

The Right Diet

Experts say that CR should be practiced along with taking care of the nutritional requirements of the body. It was also found that CR is more effective if started at an early age. But some researchers say that CR can also be effective for increasing life span if started later. But nobody recommends CR for kids.

Young children need special kinds of nutrition and calories for growth and health. Christiaan Leeuwenburgh, director of the Biochemistry of aging laboratory from the University of Florida said that CR should be adopted only after 30 years of age. He says that the age related damage cannot happen in younger people, so they should not start CR at early age.

Nevertheless, CR can induce a bunch of problems among women, like for example fertility problems due to weight loss and osteoporosis in old age. Leeuwenburgh recommend that a normal CR of 2000 calories is taken daily for women. It includes fish, chicken, fruits and vegetables and soy milk, excluding red meat.

The diet should be considered with other activities as well such as weight training for making your muscles healthy. He says that one should also do fasting once a month or once a week. The national institute on aging claims that time between the meals is very important.

Pills V/s Meals

People these days believe in CR pills rather than fasting and calorie restrictions. According to an online published paper by Assistant professor of pathology, David Sinclair from Harvard medical school it was claimed resvertrol, chemical in red wine, which is equally present in some vegetables activates an aging delaying effect. Yet, it does not cause any kind of infertility or tiredness issue.

It has also been found that CR can reduce the risk of tumor and can lower the temperature in body. This is essential for the production of protective hormones in the body.

In conclusion, CR affects our whole body. It has genetic effects on mice, worms, yeast and humans. According to the World Health Organization, roughly one billion adults are overweight; In America 34 percent of the women and 28 percent of men are obese.

Science believes that it is better to eat to live rather than living to eat.

According to new research caffeine may lead to the development of types 2 diabetes. The International Multidisciplinary Journal of Caffeine Science, a quarterly peer-reviewed journal from Mary Ann Liebert, Inc. publishers examine new evidence, which refutes earlier studies saying caffeine has a protective effect.

There are numerous studies that have demonstrated caffeine’s potential for increasing insulin resistance for people not having diabetes. This effect could make susceptible individuals more likely to develop the disease, according to James Lane, PhD, Duke University.

Studies have also shown in adults with type 2 diabetes the rise in levels of blood glucose that occurs after they consume carbohydrates is embellished if they also drink coffee.

Editor-in-Chief Jack E. James, PhD, School of Psychology, National University of Ireland says that the connection found between diabetes and caffeine beverages consumption is very important. This is especially true, when we know that more than 80% of the world’s population consumes coffee on a daily-basis.

Journal of Caffeine Research gives an authoritative source and central forum to advance knowledge of caffeine science and caffeine’s effects on human health. Its purpose is to be inclusive to the diversity of research techniques used for caffeine to be investigated. It will combine scientific research and clinical studies on caffeine.

The first issue of the Journal contains the broad scope of debate and research in this emerging clinical and scientific field. It involves an interview on “Caffeine Consumption and Combat Stress amongst Military Personnel,” and a discussion on “Caffeine, Alcohol, and Youth: A Toxic Mix,. Included are also articles on “Effects of Caffeine Consumption by Women and Men on the Outcome of In Vitro Fertilization,” “The ‘Buzz’ on Caffeine: Patterns of Caffeine Use in a Convenience Sample of College Students,” “Gender Differences in Subjective and Physiological Responses to Caffeine and the Role of Steroid Hormones,” “Loss of Coronary Dilation to N6-2-(4-Aminophenyl) Ethyladenosine in Isolated Hearts from Chronic Caffeine- and Nifedipine-Treated Rats,” “Energy Drink Use and Substance Use among Musicians, and so on. The journal will examine all the aspects of caffeine science, including the biochemistry of caffeine. This involves its human body actions; dangers; benefits, contraindications and more.

————– People Involved In the Study ———————

Leaders in the Journal editorial are Editor-in-Chief Jack E. James, PhD and a distinguished multidisciplinary editorial board – Roland Griffiths, PhD, Johns Hopkins School of Medicine; James Lane, PhD, Duke University Medical School; Sergi Ferre, MD, PhD, National Institute on Drug Abuse, and Mary Claire O’Brien, MD, Wake Forest University School of Medicine, and more.

Josephine Calvert’s only missions in life at age 91 are: work on her needlepoint, keep her house spotless and steer clear of stroke. So when her latest medical findings revealed she was in need of a heart valve replacement, she did not think twice to undergo surgery.

Interviewed at her apartment in Peter Cooper Village, Manhattan, she declared that because of her advanced age, she was not sure whether she would recover from her surgery. However, she felt the motivation to keep going somehow. Like Calvert, there is a rising trend of New Yorkers, who went past the age of 90 still going under the knife – a development the medical doctors claim that paved way for them to modify their approach on surgery.

Twenty years ago, local surgeons noted that it was rare for people over the age of 90 going through surgery in New York. Currently, there are about 5% of patients over 90 years old undergoing surgical procedures.

NYU Langone Medical Center Cardiothoracic surgery chairman Aubrey Galloway explained that long ago, people did not reach the 90s and get surgery since most of them died due to other illnesses. 91 year old Glendale, Queens resident Morris Greenberg expressed that putting off his hernia surgery would amount to deal with pain in his day-to-day life. He said the disease was already getting in the way. He didn’t want to be overcautious about his daily activities.

He made the decision to undergo surgery at Manhattan’s Beth Israel Medical Center in September. Only local anesthesia was used by Dr. Martin Karpeh to avoid bigger risks of contracting infection. If they have gotten to the age of 90 years in a relatively good health, they have a reasonable chance of surviving another decade, according to Karpeh.

Meanwhile, for New York Presbyterian’s oldest patients, doctors have opted to rely on less invasive measures – a catheter would be inserted through a small opening for valve replacement, instead of cutting open their chest.

Karl Krieger, department of cardiothoracic surgery vice chairman whose recent surgery involved a 98-year old patient, said that there’s an entire different medical approach for this population. He claimed that they already know a dozen of 100 year old patients who will be needing surgery within the next two years, and this may be one option available for them.

According to the Council of Senior Centers and Services director Bobbie Sackman, New York City’s population of over-85 years is on the rapid rise so surgery procedures are more likely to be prevalent in the years to come.

She predicted that in the medical system, more people requesting for surgery in their 90s will be more common, due to a longevity surge.
