The downside of soft drinks can appear to be worse than previously expected. During some years mothers have been refrained from drinking soda due its possible association to cavities. Moreover, Sugar-laden beverages (soft drinks) have been proved to make you more susceptible to cancer.
A study carried out by the University of Minnesota reports that the risk of acquiring pancreatic cancer is almost twice as high for those who consume, as little as, two soft drinks per week in contrast to those who do not drink these beverages. Pancreatic cancer is one of the most fatal cancers, according to CBS station.
According to Dr. Mark Pereira, the risk of being exposed to pancreatic cancer was 87% higher for those who drank at least two soft drinks per week. Those who consume a diminutive amount of no sugar-sweetened beverages have a significant less risk of suffering from similar cancers.
The research was conducted over a period of 14 years and scrutinized 60,000 people in Singapore in relation to negative impacts of soft drinks. The risk of cancer was 87% after considering other determinants such as diabetes, smoking, age and obesity. The shortcoming of soft drinks applies solely to soda whereas regular fruit juices and diet soft drinks are exclusive.
The volume of sugar in soft drinks might be the underlining cause. The pancreas has a core function of generating insulin so that the level blood sugar is balanced. However, more blood sugar implies more insulin. According to Pereira, insulin has proved to have some links with the expansion of cancer cells. The whole process might be a cause-and-effect relation.
Soft drinks are not the only substance high in sugar. Fruit juices are also highly concentrated. Nonetheless, the consumption of fruit juice is comparatively much lower than soft drink. Normal consumption of fruit juice is around 8 to 12 ounces while for soda it is 20 to 30 ounces.
