A new study which, was carried out by scientists from the Friedrich Schiller University Jena claims that longevity can be achieved through lithium. According to the research uptake of tiny elements of lithium can lead to longer life.
It has been shown that consuming a low concentration of lithium increases people’s life expectancy as well as that of the roundworm (Caenorhabditis elegans). Two approached were used to confirm that fact according to Professor Dr. Michael Ristow’s team, who worked in collaboration with Japanese colleagues coming from both the University Hiroshima and Oita.
The finding was published in an online edition of Scientific Publication European Journal of Nutrition.
Lithium is a nutritional trace element that is usually present while consuming vegetables or drinking tap water. Ristow says that he is quite unsure about the physiological changes that lithium might have on the human body. In a recent study in the U.S. consuming highly concentrated lithium did demonstrate an extension of life for C.elegans.. However, Professor of Nutrition in Jena, Ristow said, that the dosage that was studied at that time would be poisonous for humans.
It has been shown that lower concentration of lithium has longevity benefits. The consequence of consuming lithium found in ordinary tap water is still being deeply analysed.
